Human Factors Integration

Human Factors Integration

Human Factors, is about what people are doing in the environment they are being asked to do it. Can they do it? Can they do it repeatedly? For how long? Is it safe? Is it reasonable? Human Factors investigates the relationships between the human operator, the product or the systems to be used and the working environment with the aim of optimising the relationships between them, to make the system as efficient, productive and safe as possible.

Because of the way Human Factors spans many boundaries and disciplines, it offers a broader system perspective and considers issues that may arise throughout the life of the system. But the need for Human Factors interventions must first be recognised and then coordinated, which is the purpose of Human Factors Integration.

What do we do?

Every industry, organisation, or project is different in the way it approaches its business, and likewise, each is different in the way it approaches Human Factors. So the first port of call is often to put in place an overarching strategy with respect to how Human Factors will integrate with your business or project. We then use Human Factors Integration Plans as a vehicle through which Human Factors is managed and integrated within projects.

The benefits of this approach are:

  • Minimising the risk of problems later in the project when it's found that people can't operate the system or do their job effectively
  • Gets the important input of the real end users but in a coordinated and facilitated way - this is a real enabler for designing for all
  • This integrated approach provides a focus which allows different disciplines to come together and look differently at project problems
  • A pragmatic approach that delivers the human factors expertise at the right time and at the right level to keep the project moving

We have over 30 years experience of delivering Human Factors strategy and integration to ensure the efficient delivery of Human Factors across all industry sectors.
