CCTV Control Room Guidance

British Council for Shopping Centres

Background

A high profile terrorist attack on a major UK shopping centre had raised serious questions on the design of the security centres which present to protect shoppers and assist in the speedy evacuation of these complexes. Many of these control rooms had been shoe-horned into some remaining available space, were poorly laid out and provided an environment which was not commensurate with their responsibilities for looking after the safety of many thousands of shoppers on a busy day.

Project

To address this issue, the British Council of Shopping Centres commissioned us to produce a design guide to assist architects and planners in the specification and design of shopping centre control rooms.

Implementation

We were invited to join a team of experts from the Home Office and retailers to advise on all aspects relating to the planning, design and implementation of these control rooms.

The published guidance - the first of its kind for this sector - included practical advice on control room planning, room and workstation layout and environmental design.

Outcomes

A 12 page guide has been published by the BCSC
