Cab Access Ergonomics Study

Tube Lines

Background

As part of an on-going initiative to improve current cab working environments Tube Lines were made aware of various access problems within their maintenance locomotives. These locomotives are responsible for moving maintenance to and from site with cab access being from either depot, workshop, off track or tunnel sections.

Project

The aim of the study were to undertake an ergonomics review of access to 1964-1973 locomotive cabs and to assess current access problems and risks to maintenance staff. We were to take these issues and propose practical solutions to address problems and risks

Implementation

In delivering the project aims we started by gathering user feedback on current issues with access/ egress of the cab. We then examined the relevant cabs to identify the postural and physical constraints and physical dimensions of the cab. We observed operators accessing the cabs and undertaking various task activity and took photographs and video for later analysis. We also conducted a risk assessment of the Health and Safety issues surrounding cab access.

Outcomes:

During the site visit, various locations for additional grab handles that might help to reduce both postural stresses and other problems were explored and discussed. The most practicable solution appeared to be the provision of additional supportive handles inside the cab, for which three locations were investigated and ranked in terms of ergonomic effectiveness. Solutions were also offered on the following; modification to sill depth, training on entry/exit and associated risks, materials used for grab rails and door sills

Our client and the project gained value from our extensive experience in the design and assessment of mainline and metro railway cabs, working on projects for the following clients: LUL, ABB, DLR, and Bombardier amongst others. We were able to deliver design solutions backed up by the evidence provided by SAMMIE CAD tool for ergonomics modelling.
