CCD Human Factors

Aviation Security Human Factors Research

Booz & Co / TranSec

Background

CCD staff have considerable experience understanding complex environments and the inherent human factors problems that arise for people working within them. Our staff have a long history of helping organisations understand human factors issues, and developing a strategy to combat them. One approach is to develop a standardised approach to the way an organisation understands and addresses human factors issues, and in it's thirty year history, CCD has developed a number of human factors standards for a variety of industries and organisations.

Project

As a regulator, the Department for Transport (DfT) commissioned a project geared toward better understanding the performance capability of airport security staff, with a view to conducting various interventions to optimise that performance. As part of that work, it was identified that a common understanding and approach to human factors between the DfT, airports and airport suppliers would create a strong foundation for further integration of human factors in procurement and operations design. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team lead by Booz and Company, CCD provided specific HF support to the consortium in the development of a human factors standard, supporting human factors literature (introduction and benefits) and an implementation strategy.

Implementation

Working closely with Booz and Company, CCD consulted with the DfT, a wide variety of key airport security equipment suppliers, and UK airports to determine the extent of existing human factors work being undertaken, the general approach, and the level of human factors understanding
