Laboratory Risk Assessments
Medical Research Council
Background
Workstations in laboratories require staff to sit for long periods undertaking often repetitive tasks. As such they are an environment where upper limb disorders can be prevalent unless ergonomics is considered in the design of the workstation.
Project
We were commissioned by the Medical Research Council to conduct a health & safety based ergonomics assessment of the laboratory workstations at their offices at Adenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
Implementation
CCD completed laboratory risk assessments of specific tasks to ensure that the current set ups and equipment were appropriate for the users.
A consultant spent time with each individual so that they could verbally explain the equipment being used and the tasks that needed to be completed. The individual was then observed and photographed whilst completing the tasks. A risk assessment checklist was also completed which helped to determine if any aspects of the tasks required awkward, forceful or repetitive movements and postures.
Outcomes
Recommendations were made during the assessment, with particular reference to postural improvements. A report was then completed which provided further recommendations for improvements. Examples of these included trialling alternative seating, makes/models of microscopes and pipettes, providing suitable footrests and advise on the importance of rest pauses when completing the tasks.
The risk assessment process resulted in the individuals being able to adopt a much more comfortable posture. They were also more able to adjust the equipment to suit their individual requirements overall reducing the risks of them developing discomfort.
