Safety Culture
Safety culture is about addressing the more fundamental human factors in operational safety and safety management. How people perceive safety and the attitudes to safety in the workplace will have a large impact on the overall safety of the organisation.
It is common to hear of attitudes such as "I've been doing it this way for 10 years and I've never had an accident", "I know it's not safe but that's how I was told to do it", "If I speak out I might I might lose my job" or "It's not my responsibility to manage safety."
Interpersonal relationships and attitudes to co-workers can also influence operational safety where, intimidated by authority, experience or character, safety related issues may not be reported. A positive safety culture should instil an attitude of principle over perceived authority.
What do we do?
We work with organisations to diagnose the root cause of safety related incidents, including safety culture. Using a variety of techniques suited to individual circumstances, we can help develop an understanding of why accidents occur (or nearly occur) and implement preventative measures. We use methods like Safety Culture Assessment (interviews, questionnaires, focus groups), Human Error Analysis and Incident investigation and analysis.
Taking a human factors-led approach to looking at safety culture can help you understand the culture that you really have, understand the changes necessary to delivery better safety and implement the change programme to realise better performance and a positive impact on your bottom line.
